Understanding mixture properties and design is one of the most crucial steps in assuring the construction of a high quality asphalt pavement. Maximizing the performance of high quality materials and sophisticated construction practices is best achieved with a thorough understanding of both material properties and mixture design. This three and a half day course covers mix design methods for Gyratory ( Superpave ), and Marshall as well as the utilization of RAP in HMA. Specialized mixes such as SMA, OGFC and Warm Mix are also addressed in this course.
Attendees will learn about asphalt and aggregate material selection, how each component affects mixture properties, and will achieve an understanding of HMA properties including the background knowledge necessary to make critical decisions in the lab and on the construction project.
Classroom activities will include proportioning, volumetric analysis and mixture evaluation. Also offered in the course are hands-on laboratory activities that cover sample preparation and mixture testing.
Course materials will include the two leading mix design manuals in use today, the Asphalt Institute's SP-2: Superpave Mix Design Manual (Second Edition) and MS-2: Mix Design Methods for Asphalt (Sixth Edition).
Software
This course will include a demonstration of the premier tool available for selecting the proper PG binder, LTPPBind. Also, the Asphalt Institute Mix Design Program (SW-2), will be demonstrated and made available at a reduced price for those attending the course. The program offers four modules that cover Trial Blending and Mixture Design analysis for both Superpave and Marshall mix design procedures.
Optional Certification Testing
The last half-day of this course is reserved for an optional certification exam. The course participants' knowledge will be challenged with the exam typically taking from two to three hours on average. Several Specifying Agencies have accepted the Asphalt Institute Mix Design Technology Certification, either in whole or in part, as meeting the requirements for certification in their state. Prospective participants should verify the applicability of this certification with their local agency.
Who Should Attend
This course has been developed to meet the needs of those actively involved in mixture design, material specifications and field management of asphalt mixtures. State and local transportation agencies, consultants and contractors who are involved in HMA materials and design will benefit from this course.
